Fly ready

Most students focus so hard on the visa that they arrive unprepared for the first 72 hours. No housing confirmed, no SIM card, no idea where to register ? the excitement turns stressful fast.

Student Matters runs SM Launch, a pre-departure briefing programme that walks you through every step from packing to your first campus registration day. Book before you fly.

    1. SM Launch ? what we cover in your pre-departure briefing

SM Launch is a structured pre-departure session (in-person or video call) that runs through every checklist item before your flight. Students who complete SM Launch consistently report less anxiety in week one and fewer administrative problems on arrival.

We cover: your document folder, accommodation status, local transport, registration process, emergency contacts, banking steps and cultural orientation for your destination city.

    • Document verification: visa, offer, insurance, funds, IELTS certificate
    • Accommodation: confirmed address and short-term arrangement if halls are not ready
    • Airport arrival: SM RIDE coordination, immigration tips, baggage allowance reminders
    • Week-one schedule: campus registration, IRP / GNIB appointment (Ireland), BRP collection (UK)
    • Banking: how to open a student account quickly in your destination
    • SIM card: local options and how to get data on landing day
    • Emergency contacts: Student Matters, university international office, local emergency services

    2. Your pre-departure document folder

Keep one physical folder and one digital backup (cloud or email to yourself) with every document below. At immigration, having these accessible in 30 seconds ? not buried in three bags ? matters.

    • Passport (original) ? valid for at least 6 months beyond course end
    • Visa / entry clearance label or vignette (Ireland: long-stay D visa; UK: BRP letter)
    • University offer / unconditional letter
    • CAS number (UK) / CoE (Australia) / acceptance letter
    • IELTS / PTE / TOEFL original results certificate
    • Insurance certificate ? name matches passport, valid from arrival
    • Accommodation confirmation or host letter
    • Bank statement or funds evidence (in case asked at port of entry)
    • Emergency contact list (SM, university, family)
    • Medical records / prescriptions if on regular medication

    Guide · 03

    3. Accommodation ? confirm before you book the flight

Do not fly without a confirmed address for at least the first two weeks. Some campus halls do not open until a week after the semester start date ? you need a backup plan.

Short-term options (Airbnb, guesthouse, hotel) are acceptable for the first week if halls are delayed ? but book in advance. Do not arrive and search on landing day.

    • Campus hall contract: check exact move-in date vs your flight date
    • Private rental: signed lease or booking confirmation with landlord contact
    • Temporary stay: address needed for some registration forms
    • Dublin / London / Sydney rent pressure: book early, popular areas fill fast near universities
    • Red flags: never send large deposits to unseen landlords via WhatsApp
    • SM Connect alumni network: ask current students for safe area and landlord tips

    Guide · 04

    4. Week one on campus ? what to expect

The first week is the most important logistically. Registration windows, induction sessions and immigration appointments all happen in days one to seven. Missing any of these can cause delays that take weeks to resolve.

    • Ireland: GNIB / IRP registration appointment ? book early, slots fill fast in September
    • UK: BRP collection from university post room or specified post office ? within 10 days of arriving
    • Australia: OSHC and campus enrolment same week
    • Canada: study permit activation and university registration
    • All destinations: collect student ID and campus login early ? you need these for everything
    • International student office: visit on day one ? they resolve most week-one problems

    Guide · 05

    5. Banking and SIM card

Two things students always struggle with in week one: getting a bank account (requires proof of address and enrolment) and getting a local SIM (requires knowing which network).

    • Ireland banking: bring offer letter, IRP (once received), passport ? Bank of Ireland, AIB, An Post Money and Revolut are common
    • UK banking: Student accounts at major banks; Monzo/Revolut as immediate option pending IRP
    • SIM cards: buy at airport on arrival for data ? Three, Vodafone, Tesco Mobile in Ireland/UK
    • Revolut / Wise: excellent for initial money transfer and spending before local account opens
    • Emergency cash: carry some local currency for first 48 hours

    6. SM RIDE ? airport transfer coordination

Landing tired after a long flight is not the time to negotiate taxi pricing with three bags. Student Matters coordinates trusted airport transfers so you reach your accommodation safely on landing day.

Request SM RIDE at least one week before your flight with your flight number, arrival time and destination address.

    • Share flight number and arrival terminal
    • Confirm accommodation address before requesting pick-up
    • Build in buffer for immigration queues (September arrivals face longer waits)
    • Keep SM WhatsApp (+44 7459 898186) accessible on landing
    • If your flight is delayed, message us ? we monitor and adjust
