Group of 8 research universities, mandatory OSHC health cover, work rights during study and a clear Temporary Graduate visa pathway — Australia rewards students who plan their course choice against skilled migration lists.

Why choose this destination?

Australia has positioned itself as a long-term destination, not just a study stop. The combination of world-class campuses, English-medium instruction, work rights during study and a post-study visa linked to skilled migration makes it compelling for career-focused students.

Group of 8 universities (Go8) lead research rankings globally. However, many regional and mid-tier universities offer strong skilled occupation pathways that may actually be more strategically valuable than a Go8 name — Student Matters helps you think beyond rankings.

The critical decision in Australian planning: choose your course against the current skilled occupation list, not just your interest. Course selection directly affects post-study visa duration and PR pathway eligibility.

  • 8 universities in the global QS top 100 (Group of 8)
  • Work rights during study — confirm current hours with DESE
  • Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) after eligible degrees
  • Australia Awards — fully funded scholarships for selected nationalities
  • Strong skilled migration pathways from nursing, IT, engineering and accounting
  • 2 semesters per year — July and February intakes both strong

Why Australia for international students?

Australia's appeal is built on three things that matter practically: a world-respected English-medium degree, work rights while you study, and a clear post-study visa that can lead to Permanent Residency.

Unlike some destinations where the post-study pathway is vague, Australia has a structured system (Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa) with defined durations based on your qualification and where you studied.

  • 8 Go8 universities in QS global top 100 — globally respected research institutions
  • CRICOS-registered institutions required for student visa — all SM recommendations are registered
  • Two strong intakes: July (main) and February — semester-based system
  • English-medium throughout — no language barrier for South Asian applicants
  • Strong sectors: nursing, IT, engineering, accounting, education, construction
  • Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra — diverse cities with student communities

Australian university tiers — Go8 vs regional strategy

Go8 universities (Sydney, Melbourne, ANU, Queensland, UNSW, Monash, Adelaide, UWA) carry the brand. But regional universities and mid-tier institutions can be the smarter strategic choice — particularly if you are targeting skilled migration points.

Regional study can add migration points under Australian skilled visa rules. Studying in a regional area (not Sydney or Melbourne) for 2 years can add Subclass 491 pathway eligibility. Student Matters explains the trade-off: regional lifestyle vs metro career exposure.

  • Go8: research-intensive, globally ranked, competitive entry, higher fees
  • Mid-tier (Deakin, Griffith, RMIT, Curtin): strong employability, accessible entry, lower fees
  • Regional universities: Subclass 491 regional migration point advantage
  • Course accreditation matters more than rank for professional fields (nursing, engineering, accounting)
  • Sydney and Melbourne: highest living costs; Perth and Adelaide significantly cheaper
  • Campus visit recommendation: compare Sydney vs Melbourne vs Brisbane before committing

Subclass 500 student visa — GS requirement and CoE

The Subclass 500 Student Visa replaced Tier 4 in 2016. All international students studying in Australia on a full-time course at a CRICOS-registered institution must hold this visa.

Key requirement unique to Australia: the Genuine Student (GS) assessment. Your visa application must tell a consistent story about why you are studying this course in Australia, how it fits your career goals, and what your ties to home country are. A poorly prepared GS statement is a common refusal reason.

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) required before visa application
  • OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) mandatory — purchased before or with CoE
  • GS (Genuine Student) statement: explain course choice, career link, and return intention
  • Funds evidence: tuition + AUD 21,041/year living (or current DIAC figure) for first year
  • English: IELTS 6.0-6.5 minimum (varies by university); PTE Academic accepted widely
  • Biometrics and health exam may be required depending on nationality
  • Apply via ImmiAccount on the Home Affairs website

Costs — tuition, OSHC and city living

Australia is not cheap. Tuition for international students at Go8 universities ranges AUD 35,000-50,000+ per year. Mid-tier institutions are typically AUD 22,000-32,000. Living costs depend heavily on whether you study in Sydney/Melbourne or a regional city.

Student Matters builds a complete cost model: tuition + OSHC + accommodation + living + transport before you shortlist universities.

  • Tuition: AUD 22,000-32,000 (mid-tier); AUD 35,000-50,000+ (Go8) per year
  • OSHC: mandatory from visa start date; approx AUD 700-900/year for single cover
  • Sydney rent: AUD 1,800-2,500/month for shared student housing in inner suburbs
  • Melbourne rent: similar to Sydney; Adelaide and Perth noticeably cheaper
  • Part-time work rights: confirm current cap from DIAC — rules have changed recently
  • Total 2-year Master's in Sydney: budget AUD 100,000-150,000 all-in

Scholarships for Australian study

Australia Awards are fully funded scholarships offered by the Australian Government to students from developing countries in the Asia-Pacific and Africa. Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals are eligible. Deadline is typically March for July intake.

Destination Australia scholarships support students studying in regional areas. University merit awards are available at most institutions.

  • Australia Awards: fully funded — tuition, living, flights; March deadline; competitive; requires development sector focus
  • Destination Australia: AUD 15,000/year for regional university study; reduces cost significantly
  • University merit scholarships: 10-25% tuition reduction for strong academic records
  • Research Training Program (RTP): funded postgraduate research (PhD and Master's by Research)
  • TAFE scholarships: available at vocational pathway level for some nationalities
  • Chevening equivalent does not exist for Australia — plan alternative funding early

  • Graduate Work stream: 18 months (skilled occupation link required)
  • Post-Study Work stream: 2-4 years depending on degree level and study location
  • Regional study bonus: additional Subclass 485 duration for regional university graduates
  • Can work in any role during Subclass 485 — not occupation-restricted

Strategic course selection — skilled migration angle

Australia's skilled migration system rewards occupations on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List). If your field is on this list, your Australian degree can create a PR pathway. If it is not, you are relying on employer sponsorship or Subclass 485 time alone.

Student Matters helps you research which courses map to in-demand occupations before you choose a programme.

  • Nursing (RN): extremely strong pathway — 190/189 visas actively sponsored by state health departments
  • IT and Software: on MLTSSL; strong demand especially in cybersecurity, cloud, data
  • Engineering: civil, mechanical, electrical on skilled lists; assess per state
  • Accounting: CPA Australia pathway; check occupation-specific tasks carefully
  • Education: school teaching on skilled lists in some states — check annually
  • Hospitality and generic business: generally weaker skilled migration outcomes — discuss carefully
